The Labour Government has confirmed the biggest shake-up of local government in a generation, and we believe it has chosen the worst possible option for Honiton, Sidmouth and rural East and Mid Devon.
These plans create two very different Devons.
One will have the economic strength of Exeter. Another will be centred on Plymouth.
Meanwhile, Honiton, Sidmouth, Seaton, Axminster and Cullompton will be placed into one huge rural council alongside Barnstaple, Bideford and Totnes.
How does that make sense?
Our communities have far stronger links with Exeter than they do with places on the other side of the county. We travel there for work, education, healthcare and shopping. Yet Exeter, Exmouth and West Hill are being placed into a completely separate authority.
Rural Devon already faces the greatest challenges, including an ageing population, higher costs of delivering services, poorer public transport and thousands of miles of roads to maintain.
Instead of recognising those pressures, Labour's plans risk creating a rich Devon and a poor Devon, leaving one enormous rural council expected to do more with less.
We believe Honiton and Sidmouth deserve better.
