Protect Honiton's Banking Infastructure

honiton

Over the last 3 years Honiton has been hit by regular closures of its banks, this is cutting off the people of Honiton and those living in rural East Devon from having good local banking facilities that they can rely on.

Since becoming the MP in 2022 and despite several articles in local papers the erosion of in person banking facilities has only accelerated in towns like Honiton.

Despite stating that he entered politics to “help people” all Richard Foord has done has chased bank closures first in Tiverton and now in Honiton merely reacting to closures by “shouting at his computer” rather than protecting local services. Whether it be the failure to deliver on Seaton Hospital, sitting on the fence with school closures or now only pretending to care about the closure of Natwest in Honiton after the decision has been made

East Devon has been blighted by bank closures over the last decade but since 2022 the problem has worsened considerably. Factors such as Labour’s jobs tax and a lack of pressure from local politicians has led to the situation we find ourselves in today. If the current trend continues Honiton will be without in person banking altogether with poor internet connectivity and only one train into the major regional hub an hour, if you are lucky. Doing nothing will see areas like Honiton fall further behind the rest of Devon and frankly residents of our proud town deserve better.

Closure of banks in small towns like Honition affect such wide parts of the local community

  • They force elderly people to confront a form of banking that they don’t understand leaving them vulnerable to scams
  • Poor transport options mean that hard working people have to make further sacrifices to make the long journey to Exeter
  • Poor internet connectivity makes banking almost impossible for rural residents and limits the growth of small rural businesses

The Honiton and Sidmouth Conservatives are calling on residents to sign this petition to support our plan to protect Honiton’s banking infrastructure

  • Engage actively with Lloyds Bank to stress the importance of it remaining open
  • Improve transport connectivity both by road and rail between Honiton and Exeter
  • Level Up Honiton’s broadband capabilities by rolling out sufficient broadband to our rural communities.

We are calling on Devon County Council to start delivering for the people of Honiton to ensure that our towns banking infrastructure is protected and that all residents will be able to access  their desired banking facilities be that online or in person.

By signing this petition you are standing up for our town’s right to have a bank in our town centre, you are calling for better transport connections to Exeter’s wide range of banking options and you are calling for the broadband of the 21st century to make online banking work for people in East Devon
